My friend in Mississippi has Goggle Fi and since April 1st, her number sometimes comes up as a Pennsylvania number (a Verizon #) She is in my phone book so most of the time it comes up as her number on Caller ID. Twice now it has come up as a number out of Pennsylvania. Is Google Fi spoofing numbers for their customers or is it a Verizon issue (I have Verizon)?
It’s most likely a Verizon issue. The City/State/Name field is referred to as CNAM field. It’s not sent with the call but looked up on the receiving end by he carrier.Per Wikipedia:”In the USA, the caller’s name, or CNAM information, is not sent during a call. Rather, the terminating carrier is responsible for providing the Caller ID information to its customer. The terminating carrier performs a database lookup using the caller’s phone number to obtain the name information to display with Caller ID. “https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calling_Name_PresentationThe receiving carrier has to pay a fee to lookup the information to get name associated with the phone number. So cellular carriers often cheat and just look up the area code and display City state. Often the city/state information isn’t correct.
