Hello. I just read “Link units are being retired” https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/9987221?hl=enand I am totally in shock. As we know AdSense publishers have been getting the majority of their revenue by link ad units. Why Did they decide to treat link ads this way, Why google retires and wipes all link ads? what they are thinking about revenue. I think there is plan B.they may have other formats of ads they will present after link ads retire. I don’t know. What your thoughts about it?
As we know AdSense publishers have been getting the majority of their revenue by link ad units.
How do you know? I think this is highly unlikely. It’s certainly not my experience. I doubt they’d be removing them if they were lucrative for most people.
Why google retires and wipes all link ads?
They say why in the link you provided:
This is to modernize our available ad formats, based on the feedback from users, publishers and advertisers.
they may have other formats of ads they will present after link ads retire.
that’s in the link too:
Going forward, we’ll be focussing on improving and developing other ad formats to help you grow.
My opinion is that link units look spammy, and introduced a barrier between initial click (non paying) and ad click (paying). Much better to see ads straight away. The format is also non-standard across the ad industry which might have been causing operational issues.
For advertisers (like myself) they are out of date / not very useful to us modern browsers / sites don’t really need them either. it’s time to move on.
